5 Reasons Your Moisturiser Is Not Working — And the Easy Fix

You have tried three different body lotions. You apply them religiously after every shower. But your skin is still dry, rough, and dull. Before you buy yet another moisturiser, read this — because the problem is almost certainly not your moisturiser.

Reason 1 — Dead Skin Is Blocking Absorption

This is the most common reason moisturiser fails to deliver results. Your skin sheds thousands of dead cells every day. Over time, these cells form a layer on your skin's surface that acts as a physical barrier — blocking anything you apply from reaching the living skin beneath.

No matter how good your moisturiser is, if it cannot penetrate to the living skin, you will not see results. The fix is to exfoliate first. Remove the dead cell layer with a Korean exfoliating mitt once a week, and your moisturiser will absorb up to 60% more effectively.

Reason 2 — You Are Applying It to Dry Skin

Moisturisers work best on damp skin. When you apply lotion to completely dry skin, the moisturiser sits on top rather than being drawn in. Always apply your moisturiser within 60 seconds of stepping out of the shower, while your skin is still slightly damp. This traps the water in your skin and dramatically improves absorption.

Reason 3 — Your Moisturiser Does Not Match Your Skin Type

Heavy cream moisturisers are excellent for very dry skin in winter but can feel suffocating and clog pores in Pakistan's humid summers. Lightweight gel moisturisers work better in hot weather. If your moisturiser is making your skin feel greasy or is causing breakouts, switch to a lighter formulation.

Reason 4 — You Are Applying Too Little

Most people use far less moisturiser than needed. For your full body, you should be using a generous amount — about the size of a 50-rupee coin for each limb, and similar amounts for your torso. If you can apply it and feel nothing after 30 seconds, you have used too little.

Reason 5 — You Are Only Moisturising Once a Day

In dry climates or air-conditioned environments, once-a-day moisturising is often not enough. Your skin loses moisture throughout the day. If your skin is particularly dry, apply a light moisturiser in the morning after washing and again after your evening shower.

The Real Upgrade to Your Routine

All five of these issues have one thing in common — they are about getting your moisturiser to actually work, not about the moisturiser itself. The single biggest upgrade you can make is to exfoliate before moisturising.

Once a week, use a Korean exfoliating mitt to remove the dead skin barrier. Then apply your moisturiser immediately after rinsing. The difference in how your skin feels and looks will be immediate and significant.

Your current moisturiser might actually be great — it just has not had a chance to prove itself because it has been sitting on a layer of dead skin this whole time.
